Design And Analysis

Initial design phase was almost the most important part. With so many ways to approach the problem, one had to be chosen that would fulfill design requirements as well as possible. Design interations included completely magnetically driven solutions as well as largely complicated piezo electric and LED setups. The final design was robust, within the skill of the manufacturer to create, and came within budget.

Analysis was performed to ensure the design would fulfill design requirements.

Methods utilized included hand calculations, table optimization, and FEA Analysis utilizing Autodesk Simulation Mechanical.

Pictured here are results from FEA analysis performed on the vane and vane arm. Distributed forces across the vane surface were resolved into point forces localized on the vane arm itself to determine maximum stress due to concentrations in the part. These results were used to optimize the part geometry, material, and plate thickness for manufacturing.
